Alderson: Dickey could stay with Mets even without new deal

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — As much as the Mets would like closure on R.A. Dickey’s status, they aren’t about to act reflexively.

With the two sides still apart on a potential contract extension and no intriguing trade proposals from which to choose, general manager Sandy Alderson yesterday was preparing for the possibility Dickey may return to the Mets next season to play out the final year of his contract.

“It’s not preferable from our standpoint, but at some stage we’ll have to weigh options A, B and C and make a judgment,” Alderson said. “It may turn out at that time the one-year option is most viable for us.”

The Mets are offering Dickey about $20 million over two years, according to a source. Dickey is seeking closer to $30 million.

Dickey and his agent, Bo McKinnis, made an appearance at the Winter Meetings yesterday, but Alderson wasn’t planning to meet with them.

The Blue Jays, Royals, Rangers, Diamondbacks and Dodgers are among the clubs that have shown some level of interest in Dickey. But the Mets, according to a source, haven’t convinced any potential trade partners to part with the level of prospects Alderson wants in exchange for the 38-year-old knuckleballer.

David Wright said Alderson faces a “tough decision” on Dickey.

“You’re talking about a Cy Young Award winner, that doesn’t happen too often,” Wright said. “Dickey and I have become close and it’s going to be a difficult decision.

“That’s why Sandy and these guys get paid the big bucks, to make tough decisions like that.”
