Six hurt in fire at shelter

Six people, including a 5-year-old boy, were injured yesterday in a suspected arson fire at a Bronx homeless shelter, authorities said.

The blaze broke out at the Intervale Avenue shelter in Morrisania at 5:30 p.m. when five mattresses were set afire in the lobby, sources said.

Sha-keema Tillman was alerted to the fire when her children ran into her room.

“The kids came in screaming, ‘The stairs are on fire, the stairs are on fire!’ ” Tillman, 27, said.

“I looked out, I couldn’t believe it. The flames were so big, the whole stairway was gone. My husband pushed us out the window and we went down the fire escape.”

“It was getting real hot on the walls and the smoke was unbelievable,” she said.

The victims were rushed to Harlem Hospital. The child and a woman, 20, were in serious but stable condition. Three others were in stable condition.

A cop suffered non-life- threatening injuries.

It took about 30 minutes for the firefighters to get the two-alarm blaze under control, authorities said.
