Jets mulling option to re-acquire Braylon Edwards: Sources

Braylon Edwards may be coming back.

The Jets, according to sources, are mulling the option of trying to re-acquire Edwards, the wide receiver who played for them for two seasons in 2009-10 but who called the front office “idiots” in a tweet last week.

Edwards has spent this year with the Seahawks, but he was taken off their injured list yesterday. He’s now on waivers, so if the Jets try to acquire him, there are two ways to do it. One, they can put in a claim for him while he’s on waivers tomorrow. Two, they could see if he clears waivers and then try to sign him as a free agent.

The Jets’ wide receiving corps is beyond injury-plagued. Santonio Holmes has missed most of the season already with a foot injury (and is done for the year), rookie Stephen Hill has a sprained LCL in his knee and Clyde Gates has missed the last two games with a concussion.

Hill’s status for next Monday’s game against the Titans won’t be known until at least Thursday, while it’s no certainty that Gates will be ready to return either.

Thus, at the moment, the Jets have only four healthy receivers on the roster. Two are Jeremy Kerley and Chaz Schilens. The other two are Mardy Gilyard (who was just signed before the Cardinals game two weekends ago) and Jordan White (a rookie who’s appeared in one game and hasn’t caught a pass).

If Hill and Gates are out this week, the Jets’ third receiver for Monday’s game against the Titans would need to be Gilyard and their fourth receiver would need to be either White or perhaps Titus Ryan, who was signed to the practice squad yesterday. Or Edwards.
