Illegal aliens OK: poll

Yes to amnesty!

A new survey finds that Americans — by nearly a two-to-one margin — favor an immigration overhaul that would allow illegal immigrants to earn citizenship.

The Politico/George Washington poll asked voters: “Would you support an immigration reform proposal that allows illegal or undocumented immigrants to earn citizenship over a period of several years?”

The results: 62 percent support giving illegal residents the opportunity to obtain citizenship, while 35 percent are opposed.

Democrats back amnesty or a “path to citizenship” three to one and independent voters support reform by 61-35.

Republican voters are more divided, backing forgiveness by a narrow 49-45 percent.

Further, 77 percent back an immigration law that allows the children of illegal immigrants to earn the right to stay here permanently if they complete a college degree or serve in the military.

Following the thumping in last month’s election — when President Obama trounced Mitt Romney by 40 points among Hispanic voters — GOP pollsters said Republicans are ready to address immigration reform.
