Genovese wiseguy appealing sweetheart deal

A reputed Genovese crime family associate who secretly became a government informant thinks the sweetheart deal he got from the feds wasn’t sweet enough.

Joseph Caponegro – a wiseguy who worked for the crime family’s North Jersey crew under late capo Tino Fiumara – is arguing that the 14-months he received earlier this year is too long and he’s filed an appeal.

It’s an unusual step for a government informant who received a coveted letter from Brooklyn federal prosecutors chronicling the many things he did to help investigators infiltrate the Mafia.

When he was sentenced earlier this year on a mob extortion charge, Caponegro claims the court weighed too heavily one of his old assault arrests. But prosecutors insist the sentence “was substantially below” what the wiseguy otherwise would have received under federal guidelines if he had not been a federal informant.
