Newt’s Jersey girl

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich — for a nanosecond this year a contender for the GOP presidential nomination — was back on national TV Wednesday night, sharing the couch with Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, the “Jersey Shore” Guidette, on the Jay Leno show.

Yep, the very same Newt who promised America a moon colony by the end of his second presidential term.

Snooki introduced herself to Gingrich with an elegant “Jersey Shore”-style fist-bump. And why not: The two have a lot in common.

Both, for example, are New York Times best-selling authors. (Newt congratulated Snooki on her book, “It’s a Shore Thing.”)

All the while, Newt seemed tickled by Snooki’s commentary.

She invited him to join her show and drink “Ron Ron juice.” (Don’t ask.)

And she even went so far as to ask him if he had strippers at his bachelor party. (She tactfully didn’t indicate which of his three marriages she had in mind.)

Poor Newt: One moment, he’s running for president; the next, he’s schmoozing with the Snooks.

Well, maybe this odd couple can collaborate on a moon-colony reality series.

“Jersey Shore to Sea of Tranquility?”

Talk about the volatility of politics.
