Vacant building partially collapses in Brooklyn

A vacant building in Brooklyn partially collapsed Monday and there remains the possibility the entire building could come crashing down.

The owners of the dilapidated structure had been issued an “unsafe building” violation from the Dept. of Buildings last month.

Police cordoned off the area on Ovington Ave. in Bay Ridge early this morning.

Residents in surrounding buildings were evacuated.

“We heard the rumble and within minutes the fire department and police were here,” said a woman who lives near the house.

Others in the neighborhood said former residents of the now vacant building complained the building would collapse more than six years ago.

The American Red Cross was on the scene assisting temporarily displaced residents.

“Hopefully we should get back in today or tomorrow,” said a resident.
