Somber Manhattan moviegoers admitted yesterday that it was something of a rush to watch “The Dark Knight Rises” so soon after the midnight massacre at a Colorado cinema.
“It gives kind of a personal thrill, because you really never know what can happen,” said Angie Martinez, 23, of Brooklyn. “It makes it all the more real seeing the movie.”
Warner Bros. did not report domestic weekend box-office numbers out of respect for the victims, but Friday’s take was $77 million — or about $3 million less than opening day for Marvel’s “The Avengers,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
By Monday, three-day receipts for “DKR” could total about $170 million, but it has likely lost some business since the tragedy.
