This week’s couple: Sake, but no punch

OVER SUSHI and sake, Malcolm, 23, a personal trainer from Queens, and Claire, 24, an assistant at a nonprofit, met for their blind date at Haru. There, the conversation ranged from the personal to the professional and included some first-time experiences. But if they could eat together, did it mean they should be together?

He said:

Initially I was nervous. It was the first time I ever did something like this, but Claire was more attractive than I expected her to be, and her vibe was really laid-back. I overcame the shyness quickly.

The restaurant was amazing. Claire knows a lot about food so she was able to put me onto the different foods and spices, which I found attractive. With her, I tried sake for the first time, which has been on my to-do list for a few months.

The conversations we had were great. We talked about family, college, the place we grew up, movies, music and fitness. Claire is big on health advocacy, which is great.

My overall feeling of Claire is she’s fun. I don’t believe any date can be perfect, but we had good times.

She said:

When I arrived, Malcolm was already there so I approached the table and introduced myself, he didn’t stand to shake my hand, which would have been a nice gesture. Malcolm is handsome and friendly, so I was quickly put at ease. I could tell right away he was nice, if a little nervous.

Haru is a great date spot! Malcolm and I started with sake. He had never had it before, so I was happy to see he was game to try something new.

We talked but we never got into a conversational groove. I don’t think we have much in common. He’s great — interesting, driven, and attractive — but I don’t anticipate seeing each other again.
