Starring Marcia Gay Harden as her mom and Paolo Romio as her boyfriend and co-defendant. Riveting.

Another laugh-to-the-point-of-dangerous comedy. Ted (Ben Stiller) has always regretted how he humiliated himself on a date with high-school hottie Mary (Cameron Diaz). Twenty years later, he wants to find her and hires shady PI Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) to do just that. Meantime Mary’s become a gorgeous sainted orthopedic surgeon, a sports fan, avid golfer and devoted sister to as Healy calls him, her “retard” brother (W. Earl Brown). Problem is that Healy falls for her himself and tells Ted that Mary’s a fat woman confined to a wheelchair.

The way a satire about political campaigns should be. Mike Nichols and Elaine May took Joe Klein’s roman a clef about the 1992 Clinton campaign and turned it into a terrifically entertaining movie. Idealistic Henry Burton (Adrian Lester), caught in the middle of the pols, sound bites and media blitzes, refuses to give up on the possibility that Democratic governor Jack Stanton (John Travolta) is the one politician who truly believes in the people and abilities of Americans to change the world. Stanton’s campaign, however, opens Henry’s eyes to real political life — sex scandals, fake heroes and all. Also starring Emma Thompson and Billy Bob Thornton. “Primary” is best when it sticks to comedy.
