Mike rips O & Mitt on guns

Mayor Bloomberg yesterday tore into President Obama and GOP presidential rival Mitt Romney for what he called their apathetic stance on gun control in the wake of the Colorado movie massacre.

“It’s time for this country to do something, and that’s the job of the president of the United States,” the mayor said first on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

“The president has spent the last three years trying to avoid the issue, or if he’s facing it, I don’t know of anybody who has seen him face it.”

Bloomberg took swings at Romney both for changing his stance on gun control and for staying silent on the issue after last week’s massacre, in which 70 people were shot with guns that were legally purchased.

As Massachusetts governor, Romney signed a ban on assault weapons — but he has since said he’s against gun control.

“It’s time, I think, that we hold them accountable and say, ‘OK, you want our votes. What are you going to do?’ ” Bloomberg said of the candidates.

But Democratic Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper told CNN he’s not sure stricter controls would have stopped the massacre.

“If there were no assault weapons available and no this or no that, this guy is going find something, right?” Hickenlooper said.
