Dad-burned candidate

Assemblywoman Grace Meng faces a more fiercely competitive race to win a House seat in Queens following the embarrassing bribery bust of her father, Jimmy Meng, political insiders said yesterday.

Backers of her Republican opponent, City Councilman Dan Halloran, pounced on the Meng family scandal.

“People in northeast Queens are sick and tired of corruption and politics as usual,” said Vincent Tabone, vice chairman of the Queens Republican Party.

Even Democratic insiders, while maintaining that Grace Meng is still favored to win the seat in a heavily Democratic district, said her dad’s indictment is not helpful.

“It’s a huge problem when your dad is arrested on bribery charges while you’re running for Congress,” said Democratic consultant Scott Levensnon.

The Meng campaign insisted that voters will focus on the issues, and not her father.
