B’klyn street collapses

A large chunk of a Brooklyn street collapsed late afternoon today, creating a nearly 20-foot by 30-foot hole that has already swallowed three cars parked nearby, sources said.

Emergency personnel were called to 79th Street and Fifth Avenue in Bay Ridge at about 5 p.m. and are now moving cars from near the hole and assessing whether Con Ed will need to shut down power in the area.

No injuries were reported.

Resident Annette Flood — whose car fell partially into the hole before emergency personnel pulled it out — said the collapse was sudden.

“We drove home, parked the car, went in the house, put the leash on my dog, walked out and the street had collapsed with my car in it,” said Flood, who estimated she was inside the her home for about 5 minutes.. “We feel lucky that we weren’t in the hole.”
