Rabbi bleach collar

A Williamsburg business owner has been charged with throwing bleach in the face of an outspoken rabbi who exposes child abuse in the ultra-Orthodox Brooklyn community.

Meilech Schnitzler, 36, was charged with assault, menacing, criminal mischief and criminal possession of a weapon in the vicious Tuesday-afternoon attack on Satmar anti-abuse crusader Rabbi Nuchem Rosenberg, 62, on a Roebling Street sidewalk.

The fishmonger Schnitzler surrendered in Brooklyn’s 90th Precinct this morning, accompanied by a lawyer.

Rosenberg, who was treated for burns to his eyes, had named Schnitzler as his assailant immediately after the attack and today said he picked him out of a lineup.

“I identified him because I know him. I know his father-in-law from birth — we grew up together,” Rosenberg said. “I know his wife’s parents and grandparents. I’m shocked he did this because I know his family very well.”

He said he believed the bleach blitz was in retaliation for his support of the molestation victim of prominent Jewish “therapist” Nechemya Weberman, who was convicted Monday of 59 counts of abuse of the young girl.

Asked about the incident at a press conference in Brooklyn today, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said Rosenberg’s attacker threw Clorox and is “the son of someone named on the victim’s Internet site.”
