NBA: Red-hot Warriors cut down Heat
Draymond Green made a layup with 0.9 seconds left to give the Warriors, who have won five straight, a 97-95 win over the Heat in Miami. LeBron James led the Heat with 31 points as he reached the 20-point mark for the 25th consecutive game, the longest current streak in the NBA.
Kevin Durant scored 35 points and the Thunder extended its winning streak to nine games with a 92-88 victory over the Hornets. … Paul Pierce scored 34 points, including a 3-pointer at the start of the second overtime, as the Celtics beat Dallas 117-115.
SOCCER: Dempsey gets national team honor
Clint Dempsey has been voted the Futbol de Primera U.S. national team player of the year award for the second straight year and third time overall. He also won the award in 2006.
Roma midfielder Michael Bradley was second and Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard was third.
Lionel Messi scored his 87th and 88th goals of the year to give Barcelona a 2-0 win at Cordoba in the first leg of the round of 16 in the Copa del Rey.
In Houston, Abby Wambach scored twice to become only the second American woman to reach 150 international goals, and the U.S. beat China 4-0 in an exhibition game to extend its unbeaten streak to 22.
ETC.: Big East appears headed to split
The presidents of the Big East’s seven Catholic, non-FBS schools are expected to decide on their future in the Big East in the coming days and it “would be an upset” if they remained in the league, sources told ESPN. A decision is expected in the next 24-48 hours.
In Houston, Jamal Olasewere scored 26 points to help LIU-Brooklyn (4-4) defeat Rice (2-6), 97-70.
Running back Miguel Maysonet of Stony Brook was among the players named to the AP FCS All-America team. Maysonet ran for 1,964 yards and 21 TDs for the Seawolves. Fordham punter Patrick Murray was also named to the team.
Alabama QB AJ McCarron said he will return for his senior season with the Crimson Tide next year. … Texas Tech hired former QB Kliff Kingsbury as its new head coach.
