‘Chaplin’ star wins a Clive

The Clive Barnes Foundation, which perpetuates the late, great Post critic’s penchant for supporting young artists, recognized seven actors and dancers yesterday at its third annual awards ceremony.

The 2012 Clive Barnes Awards went to Rob McClure, the star of Broadway’s “Chaplin,” and New York City Ballet’s Lauren Lovette. Each award carries a $5,000 prize. For McClure, the award was bittersweet: “Chaplin” recently announced that it will close Jan. 6.

Receiving $500 each were the dance finalists, Steven Melendez of New York Theater Ballet and Ashley Murphy of Dance Theater of Harlem, and three theater finalists: Joaquina Kalukango, recognized for her performance as the rapping 13-year-old of Katori Hall’s “Hurt Village”; Derek Klena, the singing Marine of “Dogfight,” and Stephen Tyrone Williams, who played a conflicted young student in Athol Fugard’s “My Children, My Africa.”

At the ceremony at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater were Valerie Taylor Barnes, the former Royal Ballet soloist Barnes interviewed in 1950 and married 50 years later, and his daughter, Maya Johansen, who recalled the “extra little bounce” in her father’s step when he’d just seen a show he liked.
