GOLF: Elementary Watson?

Tom Watson, according to ESPN, is in New York this week and GolfWorld is reporting he will be named tomorrow as the new U.S. Ryder Cup captain. Other candidates for the 2014 matches include Larry Nelson and David Toms. The new U.S. captain will be introduced on NBC’s Today show before a news conference atop the Empire State Building .

Colleen Walker, the former LPGA player who won nine times during her 23-year career, died froom cancer last night in Valrico, Fla. She was 56.

ETC.: Magic rips D’An

Magic Johnson said new coach Mike D’Antoni’s system with the slumping Lakers “doesn’t fit the talent the Lakers have.” The Lakers are 9-13 this season after last night’s 100-94 loss in Cleveland. They are 4-8 in their last 12 games since D’Antoni took over from the fired Mike Brown. Johnson blasted D’Antoni’s plan to make the Lakers a running team.

Fordham sophomore Devon McMillan was granted his release from the basketball team and will transfer to another school. …. In Brooklyn, Dave Corley scored 19 points to lead Stony Brook (7-2) to a 77-61 win over St. Francis (2-6).

Rafael Nadal confirmed he will return to competitive tennis at the end of the month in an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi, following a six-month break to recover from a knee injury.
