Now who’s the ‘idiots:’ Jets claim WR Braylon off waivers

This is one decision from Jets management Braylon Edwards probably agrees with.

A week after Edwards called them “idiots,” the Jets’ decision-makers claimed the veteran wide receiver off waivers from the Seahawks to bolster their depleted receiving corps.

“It feels great to be going home,” Edwards said on Twitter. “Thanks to all of jet nation that continuously supported me and pushed for me. I’m back and it’s go time.”

That tweet was a bit different than last week, when he initially blasted Jets management for how it handled quarterback Mark Sanchez then later apologized. Clearly, the Jets did not hold it against him.

Edwards spent the 2009-10 seasons with the Jets, becoming one of Sanchez’s favorite targets. Edwards had 88 catches for 1,445 yards and 11 touchdowns as a Jet before they let him leave as a free agent in 2011.

Sanchez, who was at Brandon Moore’s “Moore Family Christmas Carnival” in Newark last night, was thrilled to be reunited with Edwards.

“He’s a great player,” Sanchez said moments after finding out Edwards was his teammate again. “We have a good chemistry together. I feel confident throwing him the ball. I don’t think that will change. We’ll get him in the building hopefully soon and get working.”

Edwards has played for the 49ers and Seahawks since leaving the Jets, battling injuries and catching just 23 passes in the past two years. He had eight catches for 74 yards and one touchdown this year in Seattle. He last played on Dec. 2 in a win over the Bears, but has not caught a pass since Oct. 14. He was waived-injured a week ago by Seattle then placed on their injured reserve. The team waived him with an injury designation Tuesday.

The Jets were the only team to put a claim in on Edwards, according to a source. They will assume Seattle contract, which was for one year and $825,000.

The Jets are desperate for help at the receiver position, where they have been decimated by injury. Rookie Stephen Hill is the latest to go down with a sprained LCL in his right knee on Sunday. It is unknown how long he will be out.

Edwards ripped the Jets’ front office a week ago for its handling of Sanchez.

“Don’t blame Sanchez,” Edwards tweeted. “I played there. Blame the idiots calling shots. Mark is a beast and will [prove] it when given a proper chance.”

He later apologized, tweeting, “I would like to apologize to the Jets family and my fans for my emotional outburst. Mark is a friend and former teammate, who I wholeheartedly support. Nonetheless, I have disrespected and insulted an administration that I have the utmost respect for.”

Linebacker David Harris said Edwards will help Sanchez.

“It’s a good comfort level for [Sanchez],” Harris said at Moore’s event. “When Braylon was here before, he had a good connection with him. He goes out and lays it on the line for his quarterback. He dives for passes, jumps over guys and he’s an even better run blocker.”

The Jets waived running back Kahlil Bell to clear a roster spot for Edwards, according to multiple sources.
