DOE gets $22M to fix schools

The city Department of Education has been awarded $22.7 million in state funding grants to turn around failing schools, officials said yesterday.

The money will largely go toward phasing out 15 schools — including Washington Irving HS in Manhattan and Grace Dodge Career and Technical Education HS in The Bronx.

Officials said the School Improvement Grant funds were earmarked for the first time for 25 schools that will replace closing schools.

“We’re pleased the state continues to support our efforts to replace struggling schools with new schools,” said DOE spokeswoman Connie Pankratz.
