A 73-year-old Grant City resident was acquitted of trying to purchase a gun to kill his ex-girlfriend.

Charles Baeza had faced four years in prison after he allegedly attempted to purchase a handgun and silencer from an undercover officer at a Dongan Hills pizzeria on Aug. 18, 2011.

Baeza, who since his arrest had spent 15 months in lockup, pleaded not guilty to charges of felony conspiracy, misdemeanor stalking and criminal solicitation.

He and his ex had a falling out after she failed to repay a loan for dental work, sources previously reported.

Baeza, who has been released from jail, did not testify and the DA’s Office did not comment on Tuesday’s verdict.

“He’s a free man now because the system worked,” said defense lawyer Matthew Santamauro.

Baeza was on parole at the time he was arrested after serving 20 years behind bars for killing his estranged wife, Ruth Baeza, 52, in August 1990.

A suspect was busted for stealing copper piping from a basement in St. George after his on-file DNA matched the DNA on a bottle of booze left behind, authorities said.

Dwan Pegues, 48, allegedly broke into the basement of a Fillmore Street home near York Terrace in June, records show.

After forcing open a side door, he stole the piping inside, court papers state.

He left behind a bottle of Colt .45, records show.

Police matched a DNA sample taken from the bottle to Pegues, authorities added.

J & J Recycling in Port Richmond also checked its records, and said the suspect had sold them the piping for cash.

Pegues was arrested at about 3:10 p.m. last Thursday at the corner of Richmond Terrace and Wall Street, records show.
