Shel touts early voting

ALBANY — Vote early — if not often.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver is proposing that future voting start two weeks before general elections and a week before primaries and special elections.

He said his bill would boost New York’s dismal voter turnout, which at about 46 percent last month was third lowest in the nation, and ease pressure at voting booths on Election Days.

He also wants to require disclosure of donors to special interests who use “independent expenditures” to back candidates.

“These proposals would give New York’s voters a far stronger voice and help level the playing field in the electoral process,” the speaker said.
