Busy ’12 for FDNY

The FDNY was on fire this year.

New York’s Bravest responded to more than 495,000 emergencies this year, compared with 488,000 last year.

Since Mayor Bloomberg took office in 2002, the FDNY has responded to more than 5.2 million emergencies, according to the Uniformed Firefighters Association.

“In spite of being hit with 10 major staffing cuts since 2003, New York City firefighters have done so much more, and with drastically fewer resources,” UFA President Steve Cassidy said. “The demands and toll on our firefighters are now greater than ever.”

The UFA statistics show an 11.4 percent increase in emergencies from 2000 to 2012.

This year marks the second busiest in FDNY history after 2010, when firefighters responded to 507,017 emergencies, according to the data.
