Laffey joins Mets

The Mets added some depth to their thin pitching ranks yesterday by signing left-hander Aaron Laffey to a minor league deal.

The contract includes an invitation to spring training but doesn’t impact the team’s search for a fifth starter after sending Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey to Toronto.

Laffey, who spent part of 2011 with the Yankees, started 16 games for the Blue Jays a year ago. Overall, he went 4-6 with a 4.56 ERA in 22 games while splitting time with Triple-A Las Vegas. The 27-year-old has been far more effective out of the bullpen than in the rotation and has consistently been better against left-handed hitters.
