Rutgers rides without Rice

Dane Miller scored 18 points and Rutgers eventually pulled away for a 68-56 win over Rider (6-7) yesterday in Piscataway, N.J.

Rutgers (9-2), which has won nine of its last 10, finished 3-0 under associate head coach David Cox, who filled in for Mike Rice after Rice was suspended without pay for a violation of athletic department policy.

Rice will resume his duties today.

UCLA 97, Missouri 94

In Los Angeles, Shabazz Muhammad hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:01 left in overtime to help UCLA upset No. 7 Missouri and extend the Bruins’ winning streak to five games.

Travis Wear, who finished with a career-high 22 points, added a jumper with 12 seconds left to close out the Bruins’ first win over a top-10 non-conference opponent since 2007.

Saint Joseph’s 96, Iona 91

In Philadelphia, Carl Jones netted 32 points, including the 1,500th of his career, as Saint Joseph’s snapped a two-game losing streak to top Iona.

Jones entered with 1,499 points and became the 16th Hawk to surpass the mark. The Gaels fell to 6-6.

Brown 69, Providence 68

In Providence, R.I., Tucker Halpern hit two of his eight 3-pointers in the final 31.3 seconds, rallying short-handed Brown to an upset of Providence.

The Bears (4-6), who ended a five-game losing streak against their city rivals, outscored the Friars (8-4) 9-1 in the final 44.9 seconds.

Colgate 74, Binghamton 47

In Hamilton, Murphy Burnatowski scored 23 points as Colgate snapped a six-game losing streak.

Brandon James added 12 points for the Raiders (4-9).

Villanova 70, NJIT 60

In Villanova, Pa., Ryan Arcidiacono scored 17 points to power Villanova to its fifth straight win.

Ryan Woods had 13 points for NJIT (6-6).
