Powder scare in Greenwich Village

A powder scare in a Greenwich Village apartment led to an evacuation of several buildings, police sources said.

The warrant squad went to a residence on 9th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenue to look for a woman when they spotted a white substance in an ash tray about 8:20 a.m., sources said.

A shotgun and handgun clips were also recovered.

It was not immediately clear what kind of drug or chemical it was, and the bomb squad came to the scene to investigate.

Police now believe it is an organic explosive powder mixed with another substance, which was not disclosed, sources said.

The woman was taken into police custody for questioning, as was another man in the apartment, sources added.

They have not been charged, and police are currently seeking a search warrant for the residence.
