Firefighters honor ambush vics

Hundreds of American and Canadian firefighters lined up in upstate Webster yesterday to pay their respects to the two volunteer firemen killed by a deranged gunman in a Christmas Eve ambush.

The masses joined family and friends who gathered at a funeral home to say their goodbyes to slain West Webster, NY, volunteer firefighters Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka. The two were gunned down early Monday when they arrived at a fire William Spengler Jr. had set at his lakeside home.

Spengler, 62, set the blaze, took up a sniper’s position and opened fire on the first firemen to arrive at the scene, authorities said.

Funeral services for Chiapperini are today.

Kaczowka will be buried tomorrow.
