NEW DELHI — Six men have been charged in the gang rape and murder of a medical student — a case that has sparked protests throughout India.
The suspects, who allegedly used an iron rod to inflict internal injuries, could get life in prison if found guilty.
The attack took place on a bus on Dec. 16. The woman, who had also suffered brain damage, was declared dead in a Singapore hospital yesterday.
Public outrage over the crime has provoked an ongoing debate about violence against women in a huge country where rape is common and rape-conviction rates are low.
