Jets expected to release some veterans

ORCHARD PARK —The Jets have a ton of uncertainty in their front office and coaching staff; they also have a lot of players who may not be back in 2013.

The Jets are expected to release linebacker Bart Scott, linebacker Calvin Pace, safety Eric Smith and tackle Jason Smith before free agency begins in March to clear salary-cap room.

Scott declined to comment on his future. He said he’s just concentrating on getting his injured right big toe better.

Pace said he’s not sure what will happen.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I don’t make those decisions. I would love to be [back]. We’ll see.”

The Jets also have a number of their own free agents who could depart. The most high-profile are tight end Dustin Keller, safety LaRon Landry, safety Yeremiah Bell, guard Brandon Moore, guard Matt Slauson, wide receiver Braylon Edwards, running back Shonn Greene, linebacker Bryan Thomas and defensive tackle Mike DeVito.

Most of the players said they would like to be back.

VOTE: WHO SHOULD THE JETS BRING BACK IN 2013?

“There’s a lot of great guys in this locker room, great coaching staff,” Bell said. “I think this year I probably played with the best secondary that I’ve ever played with. With that being said, I loved my time here. I really enjoyed it. Hopefully I’m back to play with these guys next year.”

* Greene rushed for 74 yards on 19 carries, moving past the 1,000-yard mark for the season. He finished with 1,063 yards.

It is the second straight year Greene has rushed for 1,000 yards. He is the fifth running back in team history to have consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, although Curtis Martin and Thomas Jones did it several times.

Greene said it was hard to feel good about a personal accomplishment on the day the Jets’ season ended.

“It’s hard,” Greene said, “but it is something for us to look forward to next season. Our offensive line did a great job all season.”

* The Jets’ 2013 schedule is now complete. They will play the Browns, Steelers, Saints, Buccaneers, Raiders, Patriots, Dolphins and Bills at home. They will play the Ravens, Bengals, Falcons, Panthers, Titans, Patriots, Bills and Dolphins on the road.

The Jets will have the No. 9 pick in the NFL Draft, which will be held April 25-27.
