Injuries put dent in MVP hopes for Knicks’ Melo

Carmelo Anthony’s MVP bid is taking a beating because of his injuries.

Anthony said yesterday he could miss his seventh game of the season — and third straight — tonight against the Portland despite participating in yesterday’s Knicks scrimmage. He has a hyperextended left knee, injured when Marcus Camby fell on it during the first half on Christmas Day in Los Angeles.

Anthony called himself “a game-time decision.’’ The Knicks officially listed Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire (left knee surgery) as questionable. Anthony said he has “no pain’’ but doesn’t feel 100 percent athletic.

“It still doesn’t feel right as far as my bounce and having my legs and the power I need,” Anthony said after practice. “If I don’t have lift or the power back in my legs [today], I don’t think I’m going to try to do it, but I’ll see.

“There’s no pain, just weakness in my leg. I don’t feel like I have the full strength that I need right now.”

In the latest MVP rankings on NBA.com, Anthony has fallen to fourth behind LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul — none of whom has missed a single game. If Anthony sits out tonight, he’ll have missed 23 percent of the Knicks’ 31 games. The Knicks are 3-3 in games Anthony has missed.

If Anthony and Stoudemire sit out, the Knicks may go with the same starting lineup of the past two games: Tyson Chandler, Kurt Thomas, James White, Ronnie Brewer and Jason Kidd. That fivesome is averaging a combined 30.7 points — just 2.2 more than Anthony.

* Iman Shumpert (knee surgery) went through his second straight day of limited practice, doing non-contact drills. He did post-ups moves against assistant coach LaSalle Thomas and Brewer. He looked to have some burst in spinning past Brewer for a layup on one play. But he also showed his explosiveness is still not there, failing to get up high enough to ram home an alley-oop feed. Shumpert has yet to be cleared for contact and still appears at least two weeks away from his debut.

* Chandler (sprained ankle) sat out his second straight practice, but coach Mike Woodson said his starting center will play through it. … The Garden gets its first look at Rookie of the Year favorite Damian Lillard, Raymond Felton’s successor as the Trail Blazers’ point guard. … Rasheed Wallace (chronic sore foot) won’t play, missing his ninth straight game.
