Giants’ player decisions

There are always comings and goings after a season and the Giants figure to be busy making changes after their 9-7 record did not get them into the playoffs. They have 22 free agents, as well as decisions to be made on other players on the roster. Here’s a look at 10 of the most notable:

* COREY WEBSTER, CB

Was the best cornerback on the team and started on two Super Bowl-winning defenses, but had a poor season. Should return, but not at $7 million.

* OSI UMENYIORA, DE

Had six sacks and, more importantly, played in every game. He thinks he’s a bona fide starter but best role is as third man in a rotation. His return is unlikely, but depends on the market for his services.

VOTE: WHO SHOULD THE GIANTS BRING BACK IN 2013?

* CHASE BLACKBURN, LB

Put in a solid season but he’s a free agent and Giants were quick to jettison him prior to 2011 campaign before bringing him back. Can still play … Can Giants think Mark Herzlich is ready for full-time duty at middle linebacker?

* DAVID DIEHL, OL

Is under contract for another season but not cheap ($4.1 million) and might be deemed expendable, although he is extremely versatile.

* MICHAEL BOLEY, LB

Lukewarm performance and precipitous drop in playing time late in season does not bode well for veteran set to make $4.25 million in 2013.

* LAWRENCE TYNES, K

Finished tied for second in NFL in field goals with 33, was successful on 85 percent of his attempts but at 34, leg strength might be an issue moving forward, and had late-season fade. He is popular, though.

* VICTOR CRUZ, WR

Not going anywhere. New deal will be finalized in the near future and even if it isn’t, he’s a restricted free agent. Feel safe investing in a Cruz No. 80 jersey.

* MARTELLUS BENNETT, TE

One-year audition produced 55 receptions for 626 yards and five touchdowns, plus adequate blocking and entertaining banter. No reason not to re-sign him unless the price gets crazy, which is unlikely.

* WILL BEATTY, LT

His original contract is up and he’s expected to be re-signed. He’s not a franchise left tackle but he’s athletic, and studs at this spot are hard to find.

* KENNY PHILLIPS, S

His deal is up and his time is most likely up. Good but not great player who hasn’t stayed healthy and might have chronic knee problems.
