Chuck Hagel for defense?

The Issue: Whether former Sen. Chuck Hagel would be a good choice for secretary of defense.

If I understand Jonathan Tobin correctly, Chuck Hagel is not up to the task of being secretary of defense because it may not be in the best interest of Israel (“Hagel & Israel’s Foes,” Jonathan Tobin, PostOpinion, Dec. 27).

Doesn’t anybody else see something wrong with that?

Were does it say that our secretary of defense has to work for two countries? I only see one country’s name in that job description.G. Cella

Hagel, erstwhile Nebraska senator and Republican in name only, is rumored to be under consideration for the critical post of secretary of defense in the second Obama administration.

Let’s parse this possibility carefully, for Hagel is far to the left of the very liberal Obama and would represent a danger to American interests and those of Israel, our closest ally in the Middle East.

Hagel traduces Israel, and believes that Hamas and Hezbollah should not be labeled as terrorist organizations.

Hagel also believes that sanctions against Iran designed to stall the Islamic Republic’s relentless quest for nuclear weapons are wrong-headed.

He also would like to pare Pentagon spending far beyond what the present secretary regards as prudent.
