Jack Nicholson and Randy Quaid were both nominated for Oscars in this terrific movie that’s both a military road trip, and buddy romp. Two rough and tumble sailors — Nicholson and Otis Young — are assigned to escort a young Navy thief (Quaid) to prison. Taking pity on the naive dope, they decide to teach him about life before he’s canned for eight years. That includes lessons in drinking and a trip to a hooker. Gotta love it.

Badges? They don’t need no stinking badges! John Huston won two Oscars, Best Screenplay and Best Director, for this brilliant, timeless movie. Two drifters (Humphrey Bogart, and Tim Holt) convince an old-time prospector, (Walter Huston, John’s dad, who won Best Supporting Actor) to help them mine for gold in the barren Mexican Sierra Madre mountains in the 1920s. Great all the way through and a helluva shocker of an ending.
