Rex confirms Sparano fired, Pettine leaving Jets

Rex Ryan is one of the few left standing.

In his end-of-season press conference Tuesday the Jets coach confirmed the team will have three new coordinators next season. Offensive coordinator Tony Sparano was fired late Monday night after one disastrous season and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine will be looking to get the same position with a different team. Secondary coach Dennis Thurman will take over for Pettine, sources told The Post. The Jets blocked Thurman from interviewing for the Raiders defensive coordinator position last season.

Ben Kotwica will take over for Mike Westhoff as special teams coordinator.

Pettine, who has been with Ryan since his days as the Ravens defensive coordinator, is interviewing with the AFC East rival Bills on Tuesday.

“Mike Pettine is going to have several opportunities,” Ryan said. “He has an interview with the Bills today. Hopefully he doesn’t take that job. We’ve been together over 10 years, he’s been a tremendous coach. He thinks it’s best for him to move on. I wish him all the best unless he goes to Buffalo.”

It will give an opportunity for Pettine to put a stamp on his own defense, as opposed to working under Ryan.

The new offensive coordinator is much more of a mystery. Ryan talked about the need for unpredictability and getting away from a ground-and-pound approach.

“I want to be more of an attack-style team, whether it’s running the pistol, different style offenses,” Ryan said. “As hard as we are to attack defensively, that I want on offense. That’s what we’re looking for, what I am looking for and I can’t wait to get the process started.”
