Car crasher into cops charges reduced

Attempted murder charges have been dropped against a Queens man who rammed his SUV into three police officers after a grand jury failed to indict him on the most serious charges.

Jeffrey Contreras, 23, was held on $300,000 bail after he turned himself in for allegedly dragging Officers Joseph Grubert and Joseph Mazella who held onto his SUV and striking Officer Anthony Crescimanno when he refused to step out of the vehicle on Aug 17.

The three officers were treated for their injuries at a local hospital.

Contreras was facing up to 25 years in prison for three counts of attempted murder, assault, aggravated vehicular assault and resisting arrest.

On New Years Eve, a grand jury voted to only indict Contreras for first-degree reckless endangerment. If convicted, he faces up to seven years in prison.

Contreras’ attorney Mitchell Elman pleaded not guilty on behalf of his client at his Supreme Court arraignment and requested to lower his bail.

The judge lowered bail to $100,000.

He was ordered back to court on March 6.
