Jets to interview 3 more GM candidates today: sources

The Jets’ search for a general manager looks as if it will stretch into next week.

The team is expanding its interview list, and knows this is a decision it cannot get wrong and is trying to be as thorough as possible.

Today, the team will interview Dolphins assistant GM Brian Gaine, Steelers director of football and business administration Omar Khan and former Bears GM Jerry Angelo, according to sources.

The Jets will conduct three more interviews tomorrow, according to a source. One of them will be Seahawks vice president of football administration John Idzik, a source said.

Angelo will be the first Jets candidate who has experience as a general manager. The team plans on interviewing two more former general managers tomorrow, but it is not known who they are. CBS Sports reported that Jim Popp, GM of the Montreal Alouettes in the CFL, has been contacted by the Jets and may interview.

ESPN reported the Jets have received permission from the Chargers to interview director of player personnel Jimmy Raye, but then later reported he was not scheduled to interview. It is unclear if Raye just turned the Jets down or if something else happened.

The Jets also had requested permission Monday from the Colts to interview their vice president of operations Tom Telesco, according to a source. But Telesco took the Chargers GM job yesterday.

The Chargers and Panthers filled their general manager vacancies yesterday, with the Panthers hiring Giants executive Dave Gettleman. That leaves the Jets, Browns and Chiefs as the only teams left looking for a GM.

Gaine has ties to the Jets, having served as a scout in the early 2000s. He is from Rockland County and went to Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey. He worked for Bill Parcells in Dallas and Miami.

Though the Jets have mainly been looking at personnel guys, Khan comes from the contract negotiation/salary cap management side of the Steelers’ operation. Idzik also comes from the business side of the Seahawks’ front office. Angelo served as the Bears GM from 2001-11.

The Jets are known to have interviewed four candidates already, one twice. They lost out on Dave Caldwell, who visited with the Jets on Friday and Tuesday, to the Jaguars.

49ers director of player personnel Tom Gamble, Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross and Jets assistant GM Scott Cohen already have interviewed.

The Jets interviewed those four between Friday and Monday, but now are expanding the interview pool. The Jets clearly were not blown away by anyone they’ve interviewed yet, but have not ruled any of the candidates out. Gamble, who was considered the early favorite, did not interview well, according to league sources.
