Dozens injured after school, NYC-bound commuter buses crash in NJ

A Wall Street-bound commuter coach collided with a New Jersey school bus yesterday, injuring nearly 30 people.

Two of the injured — including Daniel Jean-Pierre, the driver of the Academy Bus Lines bus — were in serious condition following the crash just after 8 am on Route 9 in Old Bridge, officials said.

Nearly every passenger suffered some type of injury, including broken bones and “facial injuries,” said Old Bridge police Capt. Art Carullo.

None of the injuries appear life threatening, he said.

Only two people — the driver and an aide — were on the school bus, which was on its way to pick up kids.

“We were fortunate,” said Carullo.

The Academy Bus — which began its route in Lakewood — collided with the school bus while driving in the bus lane.

The school bus — which seats 24 children — was in the process of turning right, Carullo said.

The impact sent the school bus flying onto its side.

The commuter bus, meanwhile, shot down the busy roadway, knocking down telephone lines and street signs, before smashing into a large tree.

Jean-Pierre, was pinned inside and had to be cut out.

He and another seriously injured woman were airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for treatment.

An Academy spokesman said Jean-Pierre had been hired in May and has a clean driving record.

It’s the second rush hour commuting accident in the area in two days.

On Wednesday, a ferry crashed into a Lower Manhattan pier, injuring 93 people.
