Bruno Mars sets Spotify record

Streaming music service Spotify is propelling Bruno Mars’ hit “Locked Out of Heaven” to new heights.

The track, which is currently in its fifth week atop the charts, is the first song to be streamed a million times in a single week on Spotify, according to Nielsen SoundScan numbers.

Because Spotify now submits its numbers to the Billboard chart for inclusion in overall data, it is helping keep Mars in the No. 1 spot.

The track is the first from Mars’ new album, “Unorthodox Jukebox,” which was released Dec. 11 through Warner Music’s Atlantic Records label.

His nearest competition is Korean pop star Psy’s hard-to-avoid dance hit “Gagnam Style,” which reached 900,000 streams the week of Dec. 16.

Nielsen SoundScan says that top tracks on Spotify are typically streamed between 500,000 and 750,000 times in a week.

The big number for Mars is also a reflection of Spotify’s overall user growth. In December, Spotify said that it passed a million US subscribers following its launch over a year ago.
