Post’s Vaccaro top N.Y. sportswriter

Post sports columnist Mike Vaccaro has been named New York’s 2012 sportswriter of the year by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, sharing the award with Ian O’Connor of the website ESPN New York.

It is the first NSSA award for Vaccaro, 46, who was raised in West Hempstead and joined The Post in 2002. He is a graduate of St. Bonaventure University.

“I’m humbled by this recognition, but the real reward is working with the writers and editors who make The Post the most fun newspaper a guy could ever write for,” Vaccaro said.

Bruce Beck of Channel 4 and Gary Cohen of SNY shared New York sportscaster of the year honors. It is the sixth NSSA award for Beck and the first for Cohen.

The four, along with sportswriters and sportscasters from across the country, will be will be honored as part of the organization’s Awards Weekend, June 8-10 in Salisbury, N.C.
