Hotel rates sinking near MetLife stadium

Rates are plummeting at hotels near MetLife Stadium — because innkeepers didn’t expect so many Super Bowl fans to stay in the Big Apple.

Some hotels have slashed prices by more than two-thirds, including The Days Inn in North Bergen, which in June was asking $1,300 a night for Super Bowl weekend rooms and is now charging $400.

“We anticipated it would be busier, but we didn’t get the overflow from New York that we expected,” said Mark Giangiulio, of the New Jersey Hotel and Lodging Association.

But as prices dropped in New Jersey, they spiked in the Big Apple by an average of $50. The cheapest room at The Plaza nearly doubled, from $1,100 in November to $2,000 on Tuesday.

Roughly half of New Jersey hotels within a four-mile radius of the stadium still have vacancies, including the Hilton Meadowlands, where rooms cost $386 a night, according to Orbitz.com.

Fans flying in from the West likely bought packages that offered New York City hotel deals, Giangiulo said.
