The Jets would love to be the first team to play a Super Bowl in their home stadium, and the AFC will be the home team next year. It’s a long, long, long shot, but here is how the Jets can get to MetLife Stadium next February:
FIND A QUARTERBACK
Joe Flacco and Colin Kaepernick showed how important the quarterback remains when it comes to making the Super Bowl. The Jets need to find someone to battle Mark Sanchez for the starting job in free agency or the draft.
BOLSTER THE OFFENSE
It is not just about the quarterback for the Jets. They also need answers at running back, wide receiver, tight end and on the offensive line. So, basically the entire offense is a question mark other than center and left tackle.
FIGURE OUT THE REVIS SITUATION
The longer the Darrelle Revis contract situation lingers over the Jets’ heads, the bigger a distraction becomes. GM John Idzik must decide whether trading Revis is the way to go or if the team can sign him long-term. But he needs to do it quickly.
ACE THE DRAFT
The Jets have a ton of needs and not much money to spend, creating a difficult situation for Idzik. The only way the Jets can drastically improve in 2013 is if they draft really, really well. They have the ninth overall pick, but it will be the middle rounds that are most important in rebuilding the Jets roster.
PRAY FOR A MIRACLE
Let’s be honest: The Jets are not even close to contending for a Super Bowl. To go from 6-10 to Super Sunday, they are going to need a lot of lucky breaks.
