WATCH: Christie, Letterman snack on doughnuts, share favorite fat jokes

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and David Letterman have shared some laughs about the many fat jokes the comedian has made about the lawmaker’s ample girth.

Christie has termed his plumpness “fair game” for comedians. And during his first appearance on “Late Show with David Letterman” on Monday, the outspoken Republican and potential 2016 presidential contender read two of Letterman’s jokes that he said were “some of my personal favorites.”

The governor also drew loud laughs when he pulled out a doughnut and started eating it while Letterman asked him if he was bothered by the digs that have been made about his weight. Christie said he wasn’t, noting that he laughs at the jokes if he finds them funny.

“I love you, Dave,” Christie said before taking a bite, explaining that he didn’t know the show was going to run so long.

Asked if he ever thought about going on a diet, Christie said he had, but then proclaimed, “I’m basically the healthiest fat guy you’ve ever seen in your life!”

Christie went on to recite some of his favorite Letterman jokes over the years, including a recent one from his birthday: “Chris Christie just blew out 50 candles on his birthday cake and wished for another birthday cake.”

“And this one I thought, I don’t know if it’s one of your best ones, but I think it’s very topical given what went on yesterday,” Christie said, reciting one of Letterman’s fat jokes. ”A billion dollars will be spent on potato chips for Super Bowl Sunday, and that’s just at Gov. Christie’s house.”

The pair then went on to discuss how NJ was continuing to rebuild after Hurricane Sandy.

The governor said that “42,000 families are still homeless” and “80,000 businesses haven’t reopened.

Christie said he was optimistic that as federal funds become available in the next few weeks more homes will be rebuilt and more shops can return.
