BlackBerry shares jump 15% on rebranding, upgrade

BlackBerry should change its ticker symbol every day.

Shares in the company, gained 15 percent yesterday — the first under its new BlackBerry corporate name and BBRY ticker symbol.

The smartphone maker had been known as Research In Motion.

The new branding came on the day analysts at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. upgraded the company’s stock — in anticipation of a solid launch of the BlackBerry 10.

Bernstein raised its target price from $12 to $22.

BlackBerry, which commands less than 5 percent of the smartphone market, unveiled two new phones last week. One model — the Z10, a touchscreen — launched in the UK but will not arrive on US store shelves until the end of March.

Early signs out of the UK show the BlackBerry Z10 is selling strongly, according to Jefferies analyst Peter Misek.

BlackBerry shares have dropped from almost $70 two years ago to $14.98 yesterday.
