Rebecca Taylor

The Who: Starlet Shailene Woodley and Man Repeller, Leandra Medine sat front row in a Meatpacking studio.

The What: The pastels and florals from Taylor’s last collection faded into black this season; in particular in a tweed and leather kilt, leather pencil skirt and biker jackets. Pieces were more structured with peplums and tailored tops. And skinny cargo pants were rocker chic as were vests and metallic embellishments, which were seen on skirts and tailored tops.

The Highlight: An oversized grey bomber with a shearling collar was both edgy and refined.

The Takeaway: The Taylor girl is still in there. She’s just toughened up a bit.

Backstage with Rebecca Taylor

Before the big reveal of her Fall 2013 collection, New Zealand-born designer Rebecca Taylor talked inspiration, staying in demand and the three things her label thrives off of. Here’s what she had to say.

New York Post: What was you design process like this season?

Rebecca Taylor: It always grows. I was very inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. I was reading a book called Loving Frank about his architecture and how modern it is, but how there’s a lot of references to classicism, too. That translates in the collection to really strong tailoring, crisp lines and more architectural and geometric embellishments. I was also inspired by the British punk scene.

NYP: Which pieces are the most true to your signature aesthetic?

Taylor: Everything! I wouldn’t do it otherwise. It has to feel right for us. When I do a show or when I’ve designed a collection, it has to feel Rebecca Taylor. People know us really for being a bit of a tomboy line — I call it tomgirl. We do real femininity but then we always a boyish quality, so that’s sort of how this collection is.

NYP: How do you feel about the current New York fashion scene?

Taylor: I love New York fashion at the moment! I think it’s really exciting. It’s cool, it’s hip, it’s punky, it’s fresh — it’s totally what I want to wear.

NYP: Is Fashion Week fun or is it a headache?

Taylor: I enjoy it more now than when I was younger, for sure. I have people helping me. I used to be doing it all on my own which was tough, but things have changed.

NYP: What do you attribute your success to?

Taylor: A lot of hard work, a sense of humor, and having really good people around me.
