Hundreds of cars stuck on Long Island Expressway

PORT JEFFERSON — Hundreds of cars got stuck on the Long Island Expressway due to snowy conditions, forcing motorists to spend the night in their disabled cars, police said.

Suffolk County police said cars began getting stuck Friday afternoon due to the worsening weather conditions. Mounds of snow from plows made it difficult for drivers to exit the highway.

Police say motorists remained stranded early this morning, and officers worked to get them off the road and make sure they’re safe.

Police Lt. Daniel Meyer told CBS2 that officers drove stranded drivers to diners, motels and gas stations – and that all of the motorists are now off the highway.

The Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway are both shut down in Suffolk County except for emergency vehicles.

Authorities say no injuries were reported.
