Labrador retrievers pass Yorkshire terriers as most popular purebred in NYC

Labrador retrievers pawed their way to the top as the city’s most popular purebred in 2012, grabbing the No. 1 spot from Yorkshire terriers.

Yorkies, which have been top dog since 2009, slipped to fifth on the list, said the American Kennel Club.

Bulldogs nabbed second place in the city, followed by French bulldogs and German shepherds.

Poodles were in sixth place, followed by Rottweilers, Havanese, golden retrievers and Shih Tzus.

It’s not surprising large dogs are popular in the city, said AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson.

“The city is full of dog parks, and it’s a great way to get your dog socialized and get them the exercise they need,’’ she said. “Responsible dog owners are learning that large dogs just need plenty of exercise.”

Nationally, Labrador retrievers remained the most popular breed for the 22nd consecutive year, followed by German shepherds, golden retrievers, beagles and bulldogs.
