Driver, 88, charged in Midtown DWI mayhem

An 88-year-old man was charged with DWI last night after he crashed into scaffolding in Midtown, injuring another driver.

Werner Sonn was driving through Rockefeller Center at about 4 p.m. when he accelerated into another car before careening into the scaffolding on West 48th Street, cops said.

“As soon as I heard this screech, I saw a gray Cadillac come out, and it was like Boom!” a witness said at the nearby Variety Cafe.

“If he didn’t come straight out and hit that car, he would have gone into the store.”

The other driver suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Cops on the scene said a makeshift brace was needed to support the 12 stories of scaffolding until permanent repairs could be made.

Sonn was taken to the 7th Precinct where he was also charged with reckless driving and vehicular assault.

Reached at the family’s Manhasset, LI, home this morning Sonn’s 91-year-old wife, Vivian, was baffled.

“He didn’t come home tonight,” she said. “He said he’s staying over with a friend.”
