Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said today she’s surprised no one has claimed responsibility for the deadly Boston Marathon bombing.
With no terrorist group or lone wolf taking credit for Monday’s deadly deed, there’s no way to tell if the attack was carried out by foreign or domestic terrorists, according to President George W. Bush’s secretary of state and national security adviser.
“I do think that’s odd because normally these jihadist groups, the biggest ones like al Qaeda, would take some kind of responsibility,” Rice told “CBS This Morning.”
“But because the al Qaeda and the jihadist have become so atomized that doesn’t mean this isn’t somehow related to the jihadist.”
Rice said President Obama has a difficult job ahead, comforting the American people while keeping quiet about the ongoing probe.
“The president wants to reassure the American people that the government is on the trail, so to speak, and that justice will be done,” she said
“But the president has to be careful. He has to be sure that he‘s got as much information as he can about what is now a forensic effort to understand how this attack unfolded.”
She added: “The president has to be very careful not to give out information prematurely here. And it’s entirely possibly too that they want to be certain they’re not tipping off those who might have been responsible.”
