One man was apprehended this morning and another remains on the loose after a campus police officer was shot dead and a Mercedes-Benz was carjacked on the grounds of MIT in Cambridge, Mass.

The MIT officer was responding to a report of a disturbance at about 10:30 p.m. when he was shot multiple times, Cambridge police and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said.

The two men then carjacked the Mercedes and fled the scene, according to a law-enforcement source.

The police search continued to nearby Watertown, where a man was later seen laying on the ground, surrounded by police – and subsequently detained.

Federal agents responded to the shooting on the campus just across the Charles River from Boston.

Authorities said that when they arrived at the scene, the officer appeared to have sustained several wounds.

There was no indication, as of last night, whether the shooting was related to the Boston Marathon bombing this week.

The city of Boston remains on edge in the wake of the terror attack, which killed three and maimed scores of others.

The officer was pronounced dead at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Police officers and canine units swarmed the campus to search for the gunman as it remained on lockdown.

Campus police urged students to stay indoors as the initial investigation was being conducted.
