Ed Fountaine’s Stakes Spot Plays

Sheepshead Bay

Belmont Park, eighth race. Grade 2. Purse: $200,000. 1 3/8 miles, turf, fillies and mares. Post: 4:45 p.m.

LOWDOWN:
Starformer, trained by Bill Mott, is 3-for-3 going this distance on the turf, and the five times Edgar Prado has been aboard, the 5-year-old Dynaformer mare has won four races and been second in the other. Starformer also has the edge in early speed in this spot, and she loves a soft course should it rain.

LOUISVILLE HANDICAP

Churchill Downs, 10th race. Grade 3. Purse: $100,000. 1 1/2 miles, turf, 3-year-olds and up. Post: 5:30 p.m.

LOWDOWN:
Atigun, making just his second start on turf, was a handy winner over this course on Derby Day. We know he can stay the distance, as he ran a close third in last year’s Belmont Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Marathon. Atigun also gets seven pounds from likely favorite Dark Cove.

MAJESTIC LIGHT

Monmouth Park, 11th race. Purse: $75,000. 1 mile 70 yards, 3-year-olds and up. Post: 6 p.m.

LOWDOWN:
Buffum makes his first start since he set the pace and ran fourth in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile last Nov. 24, so he might not be cranked up 100 percent. But if he runs even close to his top form, he should handle a field whose principal competitors look like their best days are behind them.

LAST WEEK: At Pimlico, Samitar (even-money) was fourth in the Gallorette; Laurie’s Rocket (5-2) was third in the Maryland Sprint Handicap paying $2.80 to show; Imagining (2-1) was 10th in the Dixie.
