Living on the Edge

There’s no need for devotees of contemporary design to travel the world in search of the cutting edge. NY Design Week, which runs through May 21, has all the bases covered.

The marquee event is the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), showcasing 517 exhibitors from more than 30 countries, at the Javits Center. While swooning over the latest in furniture, lighting, textiles, kitchens and more from established brands such as Kartell and Moroso, you’ll also encounter newfangled trends like 3D printing. The fair is open to the trade May 18-20 (free), and to the public on May 21 ($60). icff.com

The WantedDesign fair skews cooler (it’s at the Tunnel, a legendary former nightclub on 11th Avenue) and smaller, with 80-odd exhibitors. Alongside big names like Cappellini and Ligne Roset will be little-known designers from far-flung places like Istanbul and Brazil. May 18-20 ($15 in advance, $25 at the door). wanteddesignnyc.com

Other design-oriented events are taking place across the city — free of charge. Ogle Bergdorf Goodman’s windows, with mod seating by Artek and Bernhardt Design, plus groovy wallpaper by Flavor Paper on display. Union Square’s W New York boasts an ethereal installation, “Fantastico,” by Spanish design firm Wanda Barcelona, which stretches from the hotel’s front desk across its Living Room lounge. And pick up products by local designers at MoMA stores, part of its Destination: NYC collection.

Plus, make the rounds of showrooms in SoHo, NoHo, the Flatiron District and beyond — including Design Within Reach and the Future Perfect — with special designer exhibits and parties galore. Visit nycxdesign.com for info.
